This week, we’re going to look at side dishes. Whether your main course is meat, vegetables, whole grains, or one of the many other options available, the perfect side dish (or dishes) should enhance it. Side dishes give you the chance to be creative and even artistic!

Here are some tips on how to pick the best side dish:

1. Decide whether you want to have a side dish that will complement or contrast (or both) with the dominant flavour in your main dish. Perhaps several side dishes would better suit your menu?

2. For a salty main course, try serving a sweet side dish or two (such as gingered glazed carrots or roasted apples and peppers).

3. For a main course that has a lot of flavour, try serving a side dish that will absorb some of that flavour (like steamed chard or mashed yams)

4. If you are serving a spicy main dish, try matching the flavour with side dishes that both complement and temper the seasoning (for example, radishes would complement and carrots would temper the spice).
