Every once in a while, we like to remind you to wash your produce thoroughly, just in case you are like us, and would prefer to simply throw that salad mix into a bowl and eat! In many cases, the produce you receive has not been washed, as washing may reduce the length of its storage life. Even those items which have been washed at the farm may have been handled at some point before they land in your Harvest Box. As a result, it is important that you do wash your produce well before eating it -- particularly if you are not cooking it!

GREENS, in particular, need thorough washing, as they often carry dirt and various critters. We recommend that you fill a bowl or sink with water, and swish the greens around to loosen dirt. If the greens are particularly dirty (as spinach often is!), you may want to repeat this step. Then, carefully rinse leaves (individually, if necessary), and shake excess water off (or use a salad spinner if you have one).

BRASSICAS (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, etc.) are prone to grey aphids and other small bugs. For this reason, a water bath and rinse (see above) is recommended as well. One technique which works well for removing bugs is to soak the stalk/head in a bowl of lightly salted warm water for 5-10 minutes, and then rinse carefully.

ROOT VEGETABLES should be scrubbed (or peeled), and then rinsed.
