Savoy cabbage is thought to be one of the best cabbages for cooking. Its mellow flavour and unusual texture is enhanced by its versatility in the kitchen. Savoy cabbage has loose crinkly leaves that can be light to dark green. The leaves are more thick, pliable, tender, and juicy than the conventional cabbages. It grows in Western Europe as well as North and East Europe, Western Mediterranean areas, and North America.
Cabbage contains high amounts of vitamin C and is thought to protect against some forms of cancer. However, like all cabbages, savoy cabbage can cause intestinal discomfort and gas. Raffinose, the complex sugar that causes these problems, is also the culprit found in beans, brussel sprouts, broccoli, asparagus, and whole grains. Some people are more sensitive to this than others.
If you, or someone you know, is sensitive to cabbage but still can’t resist this delicious veggie, there are ways to avoid this uncomfortable problem. First, be sure to avoid mixing your meal with other products that cause gas such as beans and carbonated drinks. Second, keep the cabbage as a side dish, rather than a main dish so that you can enjoy the taste, but not ingest too much. Natural products such as Beano are also said to an effective solution.
