It’s finally here again…fresh herb season. By this time in the year, I have become accustomed to my dried, flaky herbs that all eventually begin to taste the same. Now, it is time once again to awaken my taste buds with the real thing.
Oregano is closely related to the less familiar (but also delicious) marjoram. Oregano first became popular in North America after World War II and has continued to grow in popularity ever since. It is most often found in pasta and other tomato-based sauces.
Oregano is known as the herb of happiness, tranquility, good luck, health, and protection. As with many of our familiar herbs, it also has medicinal uses. In tea form, oregano is thought to help with indigestion, bloating, flatulence, coughs, and headaches. In paste form, it can be used to help the pain of rheumatism, swelling, itching, and aching muscles. For tired joints or muscles, place a handful of oregano leaves in cheesecloth or a mesh bag and steep in a hot bath while you soak.
However, oregano is also a delicious herb to add to sauces, dressings, or marinades.
