Have you ever wondered what is so nutritious about nutritional yeast? Maybe it is something that you have never even heard of? If either is the case, I would like to introduce you to Nutritional Yeast – one of the most delicious and nutritious food supplements.
Nutritional yeast is a microscopic plant that is grown on molasses. The result is a flaky, powdery product that can be used as a healthy food supplement. It has been dried and pasteurized which makes the yeast inactive. Therefore, yeast-sensitive people do not have to worry with this type of yeast. Low in fat, calories, carbohydrates, and sodium, and loaded with protein, minerals, and vitamins, this food supplement is a great addition to any diet.
Nutritional yeast contains 18 amino acids, forming a complete protein. It also contains 15 minerals including magnesium, chromium, selenium, zinc, and phosphorus. Nutritional yeast is one of the best vegetarian sources of B-Complex vitamins. In fact, two teaspoons of nutritional yeast equals one microgram of B12 (the recommended daily dose).
Chromium, a trace element necessary to regulate blood sugar, can be found in nutritional yeast as well. Chromium is thought to increase the good cholesterol (HDL) and decrease the bad cholesterol (LDL). It is also believed to help in the functions of the arteries and blood and to enhance the immune system.
This nutrition-packed flaky yeast is versatile and delicious! It is inexpensive and can be purchased at most health-food stores. In addition to sprinkling it on rice, veggies, or popcorn, try out the recipes below. And, don’t forget, another source of nutritional yeast is the delicious Little Creek Salad Dressings!
