Last week, we looked at the delicious combination of apples and fennel. It comes as no surprise that apples can be added to many recipes to make tasty and unique dishes. Luckily, living in the Okanagan, we are graced with a wide variety of apples all year round.

During the Fall, some common types include Spartan, Gala, and Jonagold. This weekend, my family went to the 16th Annual Apple Fair hosted by the BC Orchard Museum. We were able to sample an enormous variety of different apples (some that aren’t even named yet!) and to learn about the surprisingly complex history of each one.

Here’s what I learned about Spartan, Gala, and Jonagold apples. Spartans are a cross between McIntosh and Newtown. They have crisp, white flesh, an unusually small core, and are a great all-purpose apple. Galas are a hybrid between Kidd’s Orange Red and Golden Delicious. These apples have a sweet honey flavour and can be kept in storage for many months. Jonagolds (my personal favourite) are a cross between Golden Delicious and Jonathan apples. They are a large apple, with a crisp, sweet honey taste, and a hint of tartness.
