‘Tis the season once again - the season of snow, parties, and treats and goodies. It seems everywhere we go, we come across high-calorie, low-nutrition chocolates, cookies, candies, and other delectable sweets. It is easy to fill up on empty calories and non-nutritive food during this holiday season. If you are one of those who love the sweets, but hate the guilt and extra pounds afterwards, try these low-fat, but delicious, cookies.
Tips for Healthy Baking during the Holiday season:
Fat:
*Be aware of the amount of butter in a recipe. Try finding recipes that call for less butter or use a comparative substitute.
*Use skim or soy milk instead of whole milk.
*Use applesauce to replace half the amount of oil.
*Use 3 Tbs of unsweetened cocoa powder to replace 1 oz of unsweetened chocolate.
*Replace 1 egg with 2 egg whites or Ľ C of egg substitute
Sugar:
*Limit the amount of sugar in a recipe. Try finding recipes that call for other types of sugar such as Demerara or other sweeteners such as Stevia (a sweet herb available in most Health Food Stores).
White vs Whole Grain:
*Try finding recipes that call for whole grains, oats, or other more nutritional types of flour.
*In most recipes, whole wheat flour can be substituted for white flour. Substitute 7/8 cup of whole wheat to 1 cup white flour.
